    Anti-Gun PSA

I am going to have to agree. There are certainly circumstances where kids might not feel safe with a gun in the house (a parent threatens them with it, etc. ) but that is where the possibilities end. Honestly, I would feel MORE safe with loving parents that own a gun and can protect the house and the family than one that doesn't. The gun is not the problem it is the person. If kids do not feel safe, the parent is the thing that should be turned in, not the gun.

What is your opinion of Ronald Reagan?

Obviously you can't walk in to discussion looking to concede, but in situations like Ukraine you need leverage in order to be the "an of the house". In this situation the United States tried to be the man of the house without leverage. The US does not have leverage because they have invaded several countries as well, ie. Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia denounced our actions in those cases, and we disregarded that. When Russia invaded the Ukraine the same thing happened in reverse. We denounced their actions, and they disregarded it. It is hypocritical for the US to call for Russia to stop occupying a certain sovereign territory while the US continues to be able to occupy whoever they please. If the US was not occupying the Middle East, they would have leverage. We created an international precedent that it is ok to invade another territory if it is to quell "terrorism" they used the same disguise to invade Ukraine. If the US would stay in its pants so to speak, we would be able to keep other nations in their pants too.

British legend is that Reagan was effectively subservient to Thatcher, as he liked domineering women The images that creates just gives me the creeps... Thanks for bringing that image back, now I have to purge my memory again I actually talked about this quite extensively in one of my classes and there is some compelling evidence that there was some substance to this accusation.

I think FDR set this country on a dangerous path, but that is a different argument To the point on diplomacy, diplomacy is a two way street. One cannot feel intimidated in order to make progress. Supremacy is not diplomacy. I agree we should not have helped Ukraine, and I like neither Bush or Obama. To be honest, Nixon is a GREAT example of what a diplomat should be (again another discussion) I'm not even talking about Reagan anymore

What specifically would you have wanted Obama to do differently. Or a more specific question, in your ideal world, if Bush was President, how would he have reacted to the Ukraine crisis?

Its widely acknowledged that the Soviet economy stalled in the 1970s, long before Reagan came to the White House. On top of that, during the time before Gorbachev while Reagan was in office, relations with the USSR got significantly chillier due to Reagan policy. It was dumb luck that Gorbachev came to power (the premature deaths of two Soviet Leaders) when he did. When Gorbachev came to power THAT was when relations began to thaw. I have no doubt that personal diplomacy is important in international relations, but I am a strong believer that ANY President would have been able to facilitate the collapse of the USSR. Personal diplomacy is a very important factor in IR. Just look at Obama and Putin today. There was a meeting in China that both leaders attended, if you look at pictures with both of them or look at their interaction with one another you can tell that the two don't like each other. Our relations with Russia would be in the opposite direction our president was "good" friends with theirs. I acknowledged that personal relations are important, but I think you are placing a bigger value on them than necessary. Merkel and Obama do not see eye to eye on many things, Merkel was very upset about the US spying on her,(which she has every right to be), but it has not really effected overall relations with the United States. Undoubtedly, it is hard to have two nations who don't see eye to eye reconcile while the leaders remain impersonal, but it is not impossible.

More scrutinized than Bush? Lol the second one not his dad. I'll agree that he does face lots of scrutiny, but every president in history has.It comes down to what they do while in office that determines how much people pay attention to what choices they're making. If you're thinking or suggesting that his race is the reason for the scrutiny, then there's nothing further I can say. Nixon got impeached for bugging the Democratic Party headquarters, Obama puts bugs in and on everything and the only guy in trouble for it is the one that told the public about the program. I mean there's LOADS more I can point out, yeah he gets a tough break but you kinda know that's gonna happen when you put your name on the ballot. Back to Reagan, you may be right that just about anyone could have told Gorbachev to tear his little wall down, but not just anyone did. If the US hadn't had a person in leadership that had some real nuts, the Soviets wouldn't have done it because they wouldn't have thought that if they didn't, they'd go to war with a stronger country and lost. The air of leadership may just be a facade but there's a big difference between a leader that's taken very seriously and one that has questionable testicular fortitude. Putin is still looking at Ukraine isn't he? I would argue he is scrutinized more than Bush. There was never a Bush controversy over a marine holding his umbrella. This is just one silly example. I agree that Bush was a very highly criticized President, but the majority of his scrutiny was political, which is different than the current administration, and me saying this is in no way related to race. The USSR would have fallen even without the fall of the Berlin Wall. As to the current Ukraine situation, the United States has no leverage in the situation. The US has standing armies in Iraq and Afghanistan, therefore, it is logical that Russia and Putin fails to respond to American demands. What more would Reagan do in this situation? The US condemned Putins actions, they strategically moved warships to flex military might, and they put hefty sanctions that are DESTROYING the Russian economy upon Putin and his inner ring. What more- while avoiding war- would Reagan do? Its easy to call Reagan a strong leader, but its harder to prove he would do anything different than the current administration.

I would like to debunk another theory. The USSR dissolved mainly because of the decisions of MikhailGorbachev to give the people of the USSR more choice when it comes to free speech and economic decisions. The country was so unstable that when Mr. Gorbachev made these reforms, everything else came crashing down. Anybody could have said "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.". I would also tend to disagree with lonzo on this one when it comes to he would have been in jail if he did what Obama has done. Obama has most definitely overstepped his boundaries with his power and not followed through on many promises, but he is unquestionably the most scrutinized President in our recent history.

I think his ideology was wonderful for the most part. What I do not agree with was his execution. He raised taxes when he promised to lower them, he raised spending when he promised to lower it. Those are things that I do not just overlook. Anybody can be good at speaking and promising things, it takes a special person to follow through.

Just a sidenote and OOC observation. We need more discussion like this. I think it has been a respectable conversation and an activity booster. While the situation being discussed is very sad, I hope to see more positive discussion about bettering our society in the future

The thing that gets me was that this was an indictment, not a trial. In 2010, the most recent year where data can be collected, there were over 120,000 cases brought before grand jury and only 11 yes ELEVEN did not get an indictment. There was an immense amount of pressure put on this grand jury and they acted like a trial jury. No matter what side you are on in regards to this issue, it is clear there was enough evidence and reasonable doubt to force a trial. This guy got off without as much as a trial for shooting an unarmed teenager 6 times. The details are sketchy, and that is what a trial jury is for, unfortunately they will never get that chance. The job of a grand jury is to decide if there is sufficient evidence for a formal trial. People have been indicted on significantly less than a a bullet ridden corpse. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this guy was guilty, I'm simply saying he should have gotten a trial and the trial jury should have decided his fate. The saying always goes "You will get you day in court", well apparently that doesn't apply in this case. For reference, there is about a .00009% that a person is not indicted of a crime when brought before a grand jury.

The results of the indictment trial were appalling and sad, but that said, the response has been absolutely unacceptable. It is not acceptable, or even legal to protest in the violent manner that has been going about. Every fiber of my being wanted officer Wilson to get charged with a crime, but the failure of such thing to happen does not justify the destruction of property and violent acts. Such actions only trap our society in a perpetual state of violence, something none of us want.

    So i have been thinking.....

Seattle is an awesome place. While it can be a little rainy as I imagine you must already know, the temperature and humidity is perfect. As for the city itself, it is a great place, as I am sure you know as well. I have extended family that I visited one summer and stayed two weeks and fell in love with the place.

Iraq: Should the US get involved ?

I have to totally disagree Haart. The US didn't make a mess, this "mess" is a Sunni/Shiite "mess" that has been a problem for a thousand years.

    Interpretation

To many of you, the picture above is simply a stool. This strict interpretation of life is the problem with this world. We are in need people that look at things in unique ways. When we accept only the strict interpretation of an object's purpose, we limit our minds. This idea comes out of Buddhism, but is very applicable in real life. I thought it would be a good way to exercise our brains while having fun. The rules are simple: Respond with an alternative use for a stool. Keep an open mind and be as creative as you wish As long as you can make the connection in your post, there is no wrong answer Once we run out of possibilities, I will post a new object to work with Ex: The stool can be a musical instrument (Beating on it), or a weapon (hitting somebody with it)
