    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Once again, the USA confirms its position as the world's leading provider of entertainment. My only criticism is that I find many of the principal characters too far-fetched to be believable. Still, 10/10 for the storyline. A must-watch, preferably with a glass of something tasty in hand.

    Trump's seven-nation ban

Although it looks like there is no rhyme or reason to Trump's decision, there could be another explanation. It was inevitable that he would clash with the judiciary - he's not the type of person who handles compromise well - and by trying to push through an order which, while pleasing to his core supporters is of minor importance, he can get an idea of how things stand. He presumably realizes that the Republican establishment is less than committed to him, and that could even mean that Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices will refuse to do his bidding. Incidentally, why does the US President get to select replacement Supreme Court justices? It seems incompatible with the separation of the Executive and Judicial branches of government, and results in justices who have been appointed because of their political views, rather than their legal expertise. Surely it would be better if the Supreme Court justices chose the replacement when one of their number retired or died. Edit: Apparently, Trump agrees. Today he said, "Courts seem to be so political and it would be so great for our justice system if they would be able to read a statement and do what's right."

    Trump Donald

My wife and I live in Portugal. She's from Cincinnati and our friends here are asking her why people voted for Donald Trump. They understand that Hillary Clinton was a mediocre candidate but point out that mediocre candidates are pretty much par for the course in US presidential elections. She is at a loss to explain to them how a voter could believe that Trump could be the best option for the US and its people. I imagine our friends are just a few of millions of people who are asking the same question today. Why did people vote for him?

    The 2nd Presidential Debate

Paul Ryan gave the most telling assessment of how the debate went last night.

    Debate 2016

I was reminded first by the result of the Brexit vote and then by Colombia's voters' rejection of the FARC peace plan of a friend's search for a word to describe a situation in which the choice is a no-brainer for an overwhelming majority of those outside the country but a deeply emotive decision for those within. She still hasn't found that word. Suggestions?
